Courts in Uttar Pradesh sentence two to death in rape, murder cases

Uttar Pradesh: A court sentenced one person to death and three to life imprisonment in connection with the murder of three people over a land dispute in Bharuch. Three years ago, Satya Prakash, Bhavar Singh, Sundar Singh were shot dead in Bharuch village of Raya while they were sleeping at three different places. They were allegedly murdered over a land dispute. The deceased Satya Prakash’s nephew Jeetendra had lodged an FIR against unknown people after the incident. Police then arrested Gajraj, Chandan Singh, Kali Charan, Anil Kumar and Bhagwati Devi from the village. The Additional District Judge released Bhagwati Devi as she was found to be innocent while Chandan Singh was sentenced to death after the conviction. Kali Charan, Anil Kumar and Gajraj Singh were sentenced to life imprisonment.

Social activist Sameer told India Today that this case was being heard in a Mathura court for almost three years. “Now it can probably go to the high court or even the Supreme Court,” he said. In another case in Uttar Pradesh, a man named Neeraj was sentenced to death by the Additional District Judge (Pocso) Mridul Dubey for raping a 10-year-old girl in Jasrana of Firozabad, three months ago. On September 10, 2020, a 10-year-old girl had gone with her father to take prasad from a Bhandara in Jasrana village of Firozabad. Then 30-year-old Neeraj took the girl with him on the pretext of taking her to her house and raped her in the field. An FIR was registered by the victim’s father, following which the accused was arrested. A government lawyer presented several judgments of the high court and Supreme Court.Looking at the evidence and the condition of the girl, the court convicted Neeraj and sentenced him to death under the Pocso rules.
