Mumbai: A fire broke out in the Prabhadevi area of the city in the wee hours of Saturday morning inside a godown of electric wires.According to preliminary information, the fire was reported at 5:42 am in the basement of the five-storeyed Gammon House at Veer Savarkar Road. The Mumbai Fire Brigade declared it as a Level-3 fire around 9 am.Gammon House is an old, almost historic landmark at Prabhadevi near Century Bazaar. Over 100 years old, the infrastructure company undertook the civil and piling work for the Gateway of India in 1919.At least 15 fire tenders have been rushed to the spot and efforts to contain and douse the fire are on.Police personnel, ward staff and an ambulance are also present at the spot. Surrounding areas have been engulfed with smoke from the blaze. No injuries or casualties have been reported yet.The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained. More details awaited.Only a day ago, a massive fire erupted in the Dreams Mall in Bhandup, which then escalated to the Sunrise COVID-19 hospital, which is housed on the mall’s topmost floor. A total of 11 patients, most of whom were onventilators, succumbed to the blaze. As many as 68 patients were evacuated from the hospital and were shifted to surrounding COVID centres.Apologising to the kin of the deceased, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray ordered a probe into the incident. BMC Commissioner Iqbal Chahal has also sought a detailed report of the mishap within the next 15 days.
